BLACK-FOOTED FERRET CANADIAN CONSERVATION 2009
History was made on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 when 34 black-footed ferrets were released in Canada’s Grasslands National Park near Val Marie, Saskatchewan, after an absence of nearly 70 years. The release of the ferrets, many of whom were born at the Toronto Zoo, was an international conservation dream come true: species on the brink of extinction can be saved.

August 17, 2009… The Stratford Shakespeare Festival announces that Seán Cullen will be stepping in to assume the role of Pseudolus in the current production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. War Museum acquires art by Tom Thomson, Louis-Philippe Hébert
The Canadian War Museum announced today the acquisition of two significant works of Canadian war-related art: a painted illustration by Tom Thomson and a sculpture by Louis-Philippe Hébert, two of the country’s best-known twentieth-century artists. Both pieces were purchased November 23 at an auction in Toronto, with the help of the Museum’s National Collection Fund. They will be added to the Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.

TORONTO ZOO POLAR BEAR ENJOYS COCHRANE RETIREMENT
On Monday, August 20th, much loved Zoo Polar bear Bisitek, aged 27, was transported to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat and Heritage Village, where she will enter a restful retirement. Orphaned in the wild, Bisitek was donated to the Zoo in 1980 by the Canadian Wildlife Service. In Cochrane, Bisitek will re-connect with Nikita and Aurora who, donated to the Toronto Zoo in 2001, were the subjects of a very successful naming contest before moving on to their new location.

Exhibition reveals golden riches of ancient Peru

NEW FOAL SUPPORTS SPECIES
The Toronto Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of a female Przewalski’s horse foal on June 22, 2007. Przewalski’s horses were once declared extinct in the wild, although re-introduction efforts have taken place. At present, the Zoo’s herd consists of seven animals, with a total of 150 of these horses in captivity in North America.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBER WELCOMED HOME AS A HERO TODAY AT SCIENCE NORTH
Hundreds of school-children and members of the public came out to Science North this morning to welcome home a true Sudbury hero. Meagan McGrath is Sudbury native and mountain climber who achieved her dream of climbing the tallest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents when she reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 21 (Nepal time). Everest is the world’s tallest peak at 29,028 feet (8,848 metres).

Nine Beaches Awarded International Blue Flag Certification

J. G. Ballard's Pool is a pivotal work in Don Jean-Louis's career, straddling his early small-scale explorations of nature and the large multi-media investigations of light, architecture and metaphysics that occupied him through the 1970s. Trumpeter Swan Program Goal Has Been Met!
A recent report authored by Mr. Harry Lumsden, the coordinator of the Ontario Trumpeter Swan Program, has confirmed for the first time in the program’s history, the objectives have been attained in reaching a self sustaining population of Trumpeter Swans. At this time, records have confirmed that there are now an estimated 1000 individuals in the Province of Ontario and an estimated 131 breeding pairs, a good indication of the success of the program!
